European Getaway Day 9 (24-11-2006)

Florence to Rome

We left camp that day at 8.30. On the way to Rome we stopped at a little town called Orvieto. This town was at the top of a mountain thing and we had to get a funicular to the top of it as the bus could not go up there. It was weird there was a parking lot at the bottom of the mountain where people had got the hill train up. The funicular is a train that is on a 45 degree angle to go up the hill the train is on cables and as one goes up the other comes down.

The little town was amazing it was just like a postcard. Like a city trapped in time. The only way to describe it is to show the photos. We only got 1 hour there but we could have spent half a day there easy. It was so nice and quant.

After our hour we headed back down in the funicular and then had tacos for lunch. We then headed onto Rome. When we arrived at Rome we weren’t taken to the camp site instead we were dropped off and caught the train in to have a walking tour around with Jaz while we still had light. We caught the train which was like the tube in London; 1 level and very hot.

On our tour we saw the sites of Rome even though it was getting dark we were seeing some of the things we were to go back to the next day. We saw the Pantheon, coliseum, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps and this building where there were 4000 dead monks. The thing is the monks bones had been used to cover the walls and ceiling as decorations, it was very different. After our tour we head back to the camp site and settled into our cabins. We headed back on the trains in peak hour, Very squashed.

The cabins we had were really nice and it was just Kieran an I in ours with a shower. It was good with 2 ppl per cabin. We had hamburgers for dinner and had an early night of 10:30 as we all had to get up at 7am, to make it in early the next day for the Vatican City.
