European Getaway Day 10 (25-11-2006)

Day in Roma

We all got up very early as we had to leave at 7 and had a 6:30 breakfast. The reason we had to get in there so early was to get in the queue to see the Sistine chapel, in the Vatican City. We caught the train in Line A Cornelia to Capri where the Vatican city is. We were in the queue for the chapel at 7:30 and the doors opened at 9 am we ended up getting pretty close to the front, only about 200 people in front but the line was massive and went for ages around the corner. We all went to see St Peters from the other side. We left half the group to mind the spot in the line as the other half went on the walk. It was amazing to see the huge queue and then we saw the massive area of St Peters it was great.

When the doors opened we had to go through metal detectors and a bag check. Kieran and I got in as students woot. We walked through all the museums and saw the paintings from Raphael and Michelangelo. The halls of paintings before the Sistine were amazing and in a way they detracted from the chapel as we had seen such great stuff before it. We Ended up seeing the “creation of man” the famous picture by Michelangelo. They had what I like to call shush guards who kept going shhhhhhh! To stop people from talking and were ready to stop anyone taking a photo, but they didn’t stop us. After the chapel we snuck out with the group exit and headed to St Peters so we didn’t have to line up again. We went into the crypt and saw Pope John Paul 2nds grave. We then walked around inside St Peters church. It is huge.

After the church we headed over to the Coliseum. Where we had been told about another way in without having to queue, which was by buying the tickets up at capital hill which is a 2 ticket in 1 deal. We bought our tickets there and then ran over to the Coliseum. Walked past the 45min cue and got in. It was amazing to see it in real life just as everything on this tour has been. It was amazing to see how it was built and how the stairs worked just like in modern time. You can imagine how amazing it would have been when it was first built when it could hold 60,000 people. As we had the tickets for capital hill we went back up there. Nice views of the city. We met up with the others and then walked through the forum ruins before heading back to camp on the train. Its almost incomprehensible how old the ruins actually are, and as you walk around them imagining how it would have been in its day. Archeologists are still uncovering more ruins today.

The trains were at peak hour again and it was crazy packed. One of the girls on our tour got her camera taken by a pick pocket. We then had to wait for the bus to take us back to the campsite it was a 30 min wait. The bus was also really full and the driver was not letting people get off at the front only from the back even when this lady asked him to open the front as she couldn’t get out the back. He didn’t care and she missed her stop.

Back at camp we had a stir fry for dinner before the big punch party with the money Ashoor won for us. It was a massive amount of punch easily over 20 liters. It ended up being a big night. A sculling competition (of course I won and amazed everyone) some others had an even bigger one with a bit too much drinking and a lot of spewing by them. It was a good drunken night.
